Healing Crisis: Herxheimer Reaction

It sometimes gets worse before it gets better – and it can be scary!

A Healing Crisis, also referred to as a detox reaction or Herxheimer reaction, is a phase in which symptoms may temporarily worsen as the body undergoes healing and toxin elimination. It’s a natural response that can occur in both humans and pets, including dogs, during holistic treatments like dietary changes, detox protocols, or natural therapies.

In dogs, a Healing Crisis might manifest in various ways:

  1. Increased lethargy: Your dog may appear more tired or lethargic than usual as their body works to rid itself of toxins and undergo healing processes.
  2. Digestive disturbances: Symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, or increased flatulence may occur as the body flushes out toxins. Although unsettling, it often indicates that the body is purging harmful substances.
  3. Skin reactions: Skin issues such as rashes, itching, or temporary exacerbation of existing conditions might arise as the body eliminates toxins through the skin.
  4. Behavioral changes: You may notice changes in your dog’s behavior, such as restlessness, agitation, or irritability. These could be due to discomfort during the healing process.

These crises typically arise during or shortly after implementing new treatments or therapies. They’re commonly observed when transitioning a dog to a healthier diet, starting a new supplement regimen, or undergoing holistic therapies like essential oils or herbal treatments. The crisis occurs as the body reacts to the changes and begins to eliminate accumulated toxins, pathogens, or other harmful substances.

It’s crucial for pet parents to recognize the signs of a Healing Crisis and differentiate them from symptoms of illness or adverse reactions. While the symptoms may be distressing for your dog, they are usually transient and indicate that the body is undergoing a positive healing response. Monitoring your dog closely, and soothing supportive options and support during this time can help ease the discomfort and facilitate the healing process.

*Note: Herx is pretty common in allergy cases. But we don’t want to see big “reactions” in any condition – especially pancreatitis, diabetes, CKD, etc. Sometimes low and slow is the best way forward. We just have to let the dog’s body lead the way. *

Communication is essential!
