Study Shows Chronic Stress May Promote Cancer and Impair Immune Health

A 2020 study found that chronic stress can promote cancer development by impairing immune function. The research highlights that chronic stress activates the neuroendocrine system, specifically the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). This activation leads to the production of stress hormones such as catecholamines and glucocorticoids, which play a significant role in tumorigenesis.

These stress hormones affect the immune system by reducing the activity of natural killer cells and other immune responses that typically help the body fight cancer cells. The study also indicates that chronic stress can alter the tumor microenvironment, making it more conducive to cancer growth and spread by increasing inflammation and suppressing the body’s immune surveillance capabilities.

The findings suggest that managing stress is crucial for cancer prevention and patient survival, with potential therapeutic approaches focusing on limiting the signaling pathways activated by chronic stress (PubMed) (Frontiers) (MDPI).
