Here’s a simple recipe for Slippery Elm Syrup, which can help soothe digestive issues in dogs. Slippery elm is often used to treat gastrointestinal discomfort, inflammation, and other digestive conditions like diarrhea or constipation.
Ingredients:
- 1tsp of slippery elm powder (
- 1 cup of filtered water
- 1 teaspoon of raw honey (optional, but it adds a bit of flavor and has soothing properties – avoid if your dog has diabetes).
- A glass jar or airtight container for storage
Directions:
- Heat the water: In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup of filtered water to a gentle boil.
- Add the slippery elm powder: Slowly stir in the slippery elm powder, making sure to whisk or stir it thoroughly to prevent clumping.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and allow the mixture to simmer for about 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently until it thickens into a syrupy consistency.
- Add honey (optional): If using honey, remove the syrup from heat and let it cool slightly before stirring in the honey.
- Cool and store: Once fully combined, allow the syrup to cool to room temperature. Transfer it to a glass jar or container and store it in the refrigerator. The syrup can keep for up to 1 week.
