In conventional dog foods, the Omega 6:3 ratio can be as high as 30:1, Even as you consider choosing fresh meat at the grocery there may be a variance of Omega 6 to Omega 3 at 17:1 unless you’re choosing grass-fed organic beef that comes in around the ideal 4:1.
While we and our pets need Omega 6, excess intake can cause inflammation and related diseases. You don’t even have to overfeed quantities of meat or fat sources to have the Omega 6 to Omega 3 ration get out of balance – given the inflammatory factors of kibble or many proteins.
Since most of us can’t afford organic, grass-fed (and grass-finished) meat when making gently cooked foods it’s a better option to use lean cuts of meat so there is no rendered fat and then add/rotate healthy fats such as avocado, extra-virgin olive oil, grapeseed, or coconut oil.
Adding an Omega 3 supplement is generally appropriate for most dogs – especially if they are already dealing with inflammatory conditions, intolerances, arthritis, cancer, etc. See the post on Omega 3.
Also, if you’re feeding lots of chicken – it’s very high in Omega 6. So be sure to rotate your proteins and don’t forget the fishes!
