Doc Rob Silver has put together this great mushroom dosage chart that covers our pet products, “human” products and loose powders.

"It’s important to provide enough of the active materials in mushrooms for them to have a decent health benefit. The pet-label dosing for 1 (300 mg) capsule for every 20-40 pounds can be easily used to determine an optimal amount to give of the pet-labeled capsules, which are 200 mg smaller than the pet-labeled capsules.

We give more mushrooms to larger animals and for animals with more severe problems. Cancer is a severe problem, for instance. Vaccine competence is a moderate problem. Wellness and Calming are usually Mild problems.

So if your dog has a severe problem, 1 capsule per 20 pounds of body weight would be appropriate. If your dog has a less severe problem, 1 capsule per 40 pounds would be appropriate. These recommendations should work, and mushrooms have been found to be very safe. Many mushrooms are generally recognized as safe since they are used for food as well.

If you want to use more precise administration guidelines by the actual weight of your dog in pounds (or kilograms = 2.2 pounds) you can use these guidelines:

Wellness and Daily Health
2.5-5 mg/kg beta glucans daily

Moderate Conditions
5.0-10.0 mg/kg beta glucans daily

Severe conditions
10-30 mg/kg beta glucans daily

Bulk powder found in pouches will have beta-glucan content ranging from 15% to 30%

Each level ½ teaspoon contains 1000 mg of mushroom powder

Beta-glucan = 15% = 150 mg beta-glucans per ½ teaspoon
Beta-glucan = 20% = 200 mg beta-glucans per ½ teaspoon
Beta-glucan = 25% = 250 mg of beta-glucans per ½ teaspoon
Beta-glucan = 30% = 300 mg of beta-glucans per ½ teaspoon

Capsules contain 300 mg (pet) or 500 mg (human) of powder (A 500 mg capsule is the same as ¼ teaspoon)

300 mg capsules
Beta glucan = 15% = 45 mg beta glucan per capsule
Beta glucan = 20% = 60 mg beta glucan per capsule
Beta glucan = 25% = 75 mg of beta glucans per capsule
Beta glucan = 30% = 90 mg of beta glucans per capsule

500 mg capsules (note 1 500 mg capsule is the same as ¼ teaspoon)

Beta glucan = 15% = 75 mg beta glucan per capsule
Beta glucan = 20% = 100 mg beta glucan per capsule
Beta glucan = 25% = 125 mg of beta glucans per capsule
Beta glucan = 30% = 150 mg of beta glucans per capsule"

Additional detail:

Dosing is always a little confusing
A Pet Capsule of 5 Defenders is 300mg. And it’s suggested to take 1 capsule for every 20-40 pounds.

In Bulk ¼ TSP is equivalent to 1 capsule.
So if your dog is between 50 & 60 pounds now – go to ½ TSP for general maintenance / proactive use.

How many beta glucan’s does your dog need? As noted above, there is a suggested range for the mg to give the dog based on weight and condition. This chart shows your target mg by weight

Make sure you are giving enough to be beneficial to your dog’s health (or your own), when you have a significant health concern (especially cancer).

Did you know that since mushrooms are approx 90% water - you would have to feed 10 times the volume of mushrooms to get the equivalent Beta Glucan counts as you do in the extracts?
