I was asked this week about this product’s use of Rosemary Extract. Many of you may be aware that Rosemary is often avoided for dogs with seizures. But what out the “extract”

So I asked their team for their thoughts:

Thank you very much for your email and for your trust in Jope.

Regarding your question about rosemary, we’ve encountered it before and conducted some research on it. Here’s what we found: no study or scientific support is indicating that rosemary could trigger epileptic episodes in dogs with epilepsy. Most of the concerns online relate to rosemary oils, particularly essential oils, although there is a lack of scientific evidence to support this. We use rosemary extract in our chews, and each chew contains less than 20 mg of this ingredient.

From a scientific standpoint, I do not see any reason for concern. However, if your clients are concerned or if you are not comfortable recommending it to dogs with a known history of epilepsy, I would not insist on it. We believe it is important for every individual to make informed decisions they feel good about. Unfortunately, there is no black or white answer, and many shades of gray exist.

Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

It’s primarily the answer I expected. No one is really certain of the impact of Rosemary extract on seizures. This is a common ingredient found in many products. And if you’re concerned (you have a right to be of course!), then this may not be the product for you.
