Homemade Meat-Free Pill Pockets for Dogs with Carob
Makes about 20–25 small pill pockets (depending on size)
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup coconut flour (or almond flour for added flavor)
- 2 tbsp unsweetened pumpkin puree (provides sweetness and moisture)
- 1 tbsp coconut oil (for pliability and aroma)
- 1 tbsp peanut butter (unsweetened and xylitol-free, or almond butter for diabetic dogs)
- 1–2 tbsp unsweetened applesauce (adds sweetness; adjust for dough texture)
- 1 tbsp carob powder (safe chocolate alternative, aromatic, and slightly sweet)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional; adds mild sweetness and helps mask odors)
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients:
- In a medium bowl, mix the coconut flour, pumpkin puree, coconut oil, peanut butter, applesauce, carob powder, and cinnamon until the mixture forms a firm, pliable dough.
- Adjust Texture:
- If the dough feels too dry, add a little more applesauce or pumpkin puree (1 tsp at a time). If it’s too sticky, add a bit more coconut flour.
- Shape the Pill Pockets:
- Take a small pinch of dough (about the size of a marble or large grape) and roll it into a ball. Use your finger or a utensil to create a small indentation for the pill.
- Store and Freeze:
- Place the pill pockets on a parchment-lined tray. Refrigerate for 2–3 days or freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Defrost individual pockets as needed.
How to Use
- Insert the pill into the indentation and pinch it closed. Serve immediately or store in the fridge until needed.
Why This Works
- Aromatic and sweet: Carob powder and cinnamon are enticing to dogs and mask medicinal smells.
- Grain-free and safe for sensitive dogs: Coconut flour is gentle on digestion, and the ingredients avoid common allergens.
- Pliable and easy to store: The dough is firm but malleable, perfect for hiding pills, and stays fresh in the fridge or freezer.
