Most people do no realize how many Essential Oils may be present in their every day lives. And yet, these same folks often run from someone like me when I mention using essential oils for wellness. There’s a big fear of essential oils.
In every day products you may see:
- Eucalyptol (#eucalyptus) can be found in personal care products (nasal congestion), pharmaceuticals, antiseptics, insect repellents, baked goods, confectionery, meats, beverages, fragrances, dental care products, soaps, and industrial products.
*Linalool (#lavender) can be found in household cleaners, beverages, candies, chewing gum, ice creams, condiment relishes, meat products, baked goods, soaps, shampoos, pillow packs, air “fresheners”, laundry detergents, bath bombs, facial serums, etc.
*Vanillin (#vanilla) is used in perfumes and fragrances in both cleaning products and candles, in the food industry to flavor chocolate, baked goods, and ice cream, and in medicines to mask unpleasant flavors.
*Geraniol (#geranium) is used as a fragrance compound in several cosmetic and household products, and a survey of consumer products showed that it is present in 76% of deodorants on the European market, included in 41% of domestic and household products, and in 33% of cosmetic formulations based on “natural” ingredients.
- Citronellol (#citronella) is commonly used to add floral and citrus notes to perfumes, soaps and cosmetics, as well as insect repellants.
…and the list goes on… even in products like soft drinks and chewing gum.
One issue though with many of the products in today’s market is synthetic or adulterated essential oils.
In many cases, rather than the ingredients or constituents being pure essential oils, they may be synthetic versions of an essential oil. When these use essential oils as a fragrance, they are typically not required to state whether it is a natural or synthetic source. (hint: for price purposes, it’s often synthetic!)
The body doesn’t know what to do with synthetic products. Synthetic products will not work the same as authentic, they will not include the full power of an authentic essential oil and it’s many unique constituents, and they may bring unwanted side effects – whether it’s in fragrance, foods or medicines.
I’d like to help you overcome your fear of essential oils and start using them for yourself, your family and your pets!
