DGL: Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice

Understanding DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice) for Dog Health

Licorice root has been celebrated for centuries for its soothing properties, especially for gastrointestinal health. For dogs, however, the presence of glycyrrhizin in traditional licorice can pose health risks, such as elevated blood pressure and potential toxicity with long-term use. That’s where DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) comes in as a safer and equally effective alternative.

What is DGL?

DGL is a form of licorice root that has been processed to remove glycyrrhizin—the compound responsible for licorice’s characteristic sweetness and its potential to cause adverse health effects. By removing glycyrrhizin, DGL retains licorice’s healing properties while making it safe for longer-term use in both humans and dogs.

How Does DGL Work?

DGL works by forming a protective coating over the stomach and intestinal lining. This protective barrier helps to:

  • Soothe irritation: Reducing inflammation caused by stomach acid or irritants.
  • Promote healing: Aiding in the repair of ulcers and damaged gastrointestinal tissue.
  • Support digestive health: Providing relief for conditions such as gastritis or acid reflux.

Benefits of DGL for Dogs

  • Safe for Long-Term Use: Unlike regular licorice, DGL can be used over extended periods without causing high blood pressure or other side effects.
  • Natural Ulcer Remedy: Ideal for dogs suffering from stomach ulcers or digestive discomfort.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Reduces inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, making it useful for dogs with chronic digestive issues.
  • Calming Effect: Helps manage symptoms of stress-related gastrointestinal problems, such as diarrhea or vomiting.

When to Use DGL

DGL can be helpful for dogs experiencing:

  • Ulcers or acid reflux: A natural way to alleviate discomfort.
  • Gastritis or inflammation: Soothing irritated stomach linings.
  • Chronic digestive disorders: Such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  • Stress-induced GI upset: Ideal for dogs prone to digestive issues during travel, vet visits, or other stressful events.

How to Administer DGL to Dogs

DGL is available in various forms, including chewable tablets, powders, and capsules. When administering DGL to your dog, keep the following in mind:

  1. Choose the right product: Opt for a pet-safe DGL supplement without added sweeteners or fillers.
  2. Follow dosage guidelines: Consult with your holistic veterinarian to determine the appropriate dose based on your dog’s size and condition.
  3. Administer with food: Giving DGL with meals can enhance its soothing effects on the stomach lining.

The proper dosing of DGL for dogs depends on the size of the dog, the form of the supplement, and the condition being treated. Since specific dosages can vary between products, here are some general guidelines to consider:

  1. Weight-Based Dosing:
  • Small dogs (under 20 lbs): ~50-100 mg, 1-2 times daily.
  • Medium dogs (20-50 lbs): ~100-200 mg, 1-2 times daily.
  • Large dogs (over 50 lbs): ~200-300 mg, 1-2 times daily.
  1. Form of DGL:
  • Powder: Start with a small pinch mixed into food and gradually increase to recommended levels based on weight.
  • Chewable Tablets: Follow the product\u2019s instructions for dogs or consult your veterinarian.
  • Capsules: Open capsules and sprinkle a portion over food; this allows for precise control of dosage.
  1. Condition-Based Dosing:
  • For mild digestive discomfort: Use the lower end of the dose range.
  • For chronic conditions like ulcers or IBD: Work up to the higher end, under veterinary guidance.
  1. Administration Timing:
  • Give DGL 20-30 minutes before meals to maximize its protective effects on the stomach lining.
  1. Veterinary Guidance: Consult your holistic veterinarian to evaluate use for your dog particularly if your dog is on other medications or has a complex health condition.

Precautions

While DGL is generally safe for dogs, it’s important to use it responsibly:

  • Consult Your Vet: Always seek veterinary advice before introducing new supplements.
  • Monitor for Allergies: Watch for any signs of allergic reactions or sensitivity.
  • Avoid in Pregnant Dogs: DGL is not recommended for use in pregnant or lactating dogs without veterinary supervision.

Thanks to Mary Rhea for sharing about using this product in her protocol for her dog with CKD and getting him to eat better! I’m going to add this to my “finicky” eater guide.

Thanks, Dana, for the attribution. I’m sure the reason DGL helped Calvin eat better is because he was not in so much pain from an undiagnosed ulcer. He ate so well when he was not experiencing that pain. He was undoubtedly a very picky eater all his life!
